AN artisan bakery in the city has won the best loaf competition for a speciality bread with a semi-sweet taste.

Peter Cooks Bread based in The Hopmarket in Worcester has taken home a trophy in the 2024 Britain’s Best Loaf competition for its Kuschty Rye loaf.

The Bromyard-based baker took home a trophy from the competition held at NEC Birmingham on April 30 after its bread was voted a winner by a panel of experts from the UK baking industry.

With nearly 200 loaves entered, the judges deemed the Kuschty Rye from Peter Cooks Bread the finest in the Innovation category.

Britain’s Best Loaf – organised by leading baking industry publication British Baker – is an annual event that honours the finest bread produced by the nation’s best bakers.

Every loaf entered across the eight categories is put through its paces by the expert judges and scored on external appearance, internal structure, aroma, and taste. The rigorous process means the winning loaves in each category are truly deserving of their ‘Britain’s best’ titles.

Amy North, editor of British Baker, said: “This competition is about celebrating the skills and craftmanship the nation's bread makers have to offer. The quantity and quality of entries was stronger than ever, so the judges truly had their work cut out to find the winners.

“By receiving the honour of Britain’s Best Innovative Loaf, Kuschty Rye from Peter Cooks Bread has shown it truly represents bread making at its finest.

“This loaf came about after collaboration with another Herefordshire food business, Willy's ACV, which was launching its Organic Live Balsamic Vinegar.

"Having been impressed with the flavour, Peter Cooks Bread decided to take its 100 per cent rye sourdough loaf and add raisins soaked in the balsamic vinegar and local Herefordshire apples to the dough.

"The result is a semi-sweet wholegrain loaf that pairs well with mature strong cheeses, as well as simply eaten by itself. “It worked perfectly,” said the judges.

The eight categories are: Flavoured Sourdough, Gluten-free, Innovation, International, Plain Sourdough, Seeded Sourdough, White, Wholegrain.
