THE REMEMBRANCE Day parade in Ledbury last Sunday is being hailed by organisers as "one massive highlight in the town’s calendar".

Hundreds of people gathered in the town centre for a parade and service near the war memorial.

In attendance were representatives from HMS Ledbury and a detachment of the Ross-on-Wye Territorial Reserves.

The County’s Lord Lieutenant was represented by her Deputy Lieutenant, Helen Thomas, and other dignitaries included representatives from Herefordshire Council and Ledbury Town Council.

With the event passing off smoothly, with hundreds of people gathering in Ledbury town centre, planning is already underway for next year's event. But first of all, scores of thank you letters had to be written and sent.

Parade Marshal, Len Huff, a retired Royal Marines captain, said: "One evening this week, I spent close to four hours writing ‘thank-you’ letters to all those who supported me during the intense, two-month build-up to the parade.

"I understand that Lloyd Meredith, President of the Royal British Legion in Ledbury had close to 1,000 Order of Service sheets printed and all were handed out. Some folks, I understand, did not get a sheet, so that gives an idea of the number of attendees."

Mr Huff added: "Lloyd and I were working together, liaising together with Colin Herbert, the bandmaster and many, many others during the whole of the week leading up to Sunday’s parade.

"It is a major event, to allow the great British public to remember and honour the monumental, the ultimate sacrifice that we all, should, know was paid by so many millions of men and women from throughout the world."

In the town council contingent was Cllr Martin Eager, who agreed with the number of people in the town centre, as indicated by Mr Huff's account.

Cllr Eager said: "There were not quite so many as last year, but it was a good crowd. My judgement would be about 1000 people."
