CRITICALLY-acclaimed vocal ensemble, The Sixteen, are set to raise the roof of Worcester Cathedral, with Bach's Magnificat.

This February, The Sixteen embarks on an eight date tour of the UK, alongside the choir's own period instrument orchestra and sopranos Katy Hill, Alexandra Kidgell and Charlotte Mobbs.

The line-up will also include alto Daniel Collins, tenors Jeremy Budd and Mark Dobell and bass Eamonn Dougan.

Written in Leipzig for the 1723 Christmas Vespers, Bach's Magnificat was the first major liturgical composition on a Latin text by Bach.

A spokesman said: "The splendour and jubilation of Bach’s Magnificat anticipates the great choruses of his later work, Mass in B minor.

"The programme also features Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3 and a selection of Cantatas including Singet dem Herrn, Gloria in excelsis Deo, Sinfonia from Cantata BWV 156, Jesus bleibet meine Freude and Sinfonia from part 2 of Cantata BWV 75."

The date for the diary is February 24, from 7.30pm.
