COULD Ledbury spearhead a revival of interest in films from the silent era?

Herefordshire Historic Churches Trust (HHCT) will be showing a screening of Harold Lloyd’s silent film classic “Safety Last”, at Ledbury Parish Church, and there will be live organ accompaniment improvised by Jonathan Hope, Assistant Organist at Gloucester Cathedral.

A spokesman said: "In the first of it’s kind in Herefordshire HHCT hopes this will commence a a series of similar fund-raising events across the county’s many wonderful churches.

"Jonathan Hope is quickly gaining a reputation at home and abroad as one of the most dynamic young organists of his generation."

HHCT chairman, David Furnival said “There are many fantastic films from the silent era which rarely get shown these days. They were originally designed to be shown with live musical accompaniment and while very few cinema organs now survive, screenings in churches with organ accompaniment are a great way to showcase our beautiful churches as well as their organs.

"We hope that this event will appeal to film buffs and organ enthusiasts alike.”

“Safety Last” will be shown on Saturday February 4 at 7.30pm in St Michael’s Church, Ledbury.
