ENGLISH Touring Theatre has announced Victor Oshin as Othello in the upcoming revival of Richard Twyman’s critically acclaimed production of Othello.

And the good news is, the classic Shakespeare tragedy is coming to The Everyman in Cheltenham, this autumn.

A spokesman for the ETT said: “We are delighted to be working with Victor Oshin in the title role.

“Victor is a dynamic actor of huge potential and we look forward to giving audiences across the country the chance to see him in his professional stage debut.”

The spokesman added: “We’ll soon be announcing the full company of actors that he will be working alongside to bring this masterful play to life.”

In addition, ETT’s Othello Education Programme will run alongside the tour “offering students and teachers insight into Shakespeare’s Othello and their critically acclaimed production”.

Othello is one of Shakespeare’s best known tragedies and it dates from around 1603, when Shakespeare was at the height of his powers.

The play is a study of nobility undermined by jealousy; and it also touches upon questions of race and prejudice.

Othello is a highly successful and respected general for the Venetian empire, but he is also “the moor”, an outsider in the society he serves.

His social success, and his happy marriage to Desdemona, inspire a subordinate soldier, the poisonous Iago, to attempt to bring him down.

And it is Othello’s jealous nature, undermining even the sense of his own worth and values, that Iago will manipulate.

English Touring Theatre, Oxford Playhouse and Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory will resent Othello for a UK tour from September 18 to November 24.

The run at The Everyman will take place from October 16 to October 20.
