Top Hat - Bristol Hippodrome
GINGER Rogers and Fred Astaire set the standard in 1935 the RKO film Top Hat was the biggest smash of the 30’s earning $3.2 million at the box office – with no preconceived idea I was looking forward to how Tom Chambers as Jerry Travers and Summer Strallen as Dale Tremont would perform – it has been well worth the wait.
A story of love and mistaken identity which follows American singing and dancing star Jerry Travers pursue his love interest. (Chambers was winner of Strictly Come Dancing in 2008 is dazzling as Astaire) the talented and gorgeous Dale Tremont (Summer Strallen ex Hollyoaks) is at the top of her profession.
Slick choreography, show stopping sets, superb leads and a wonderful cast make this a production to remember.
Top Hat includes classic Irving Berlin lines: ‘before you get married you’re incomplete…once you are married, you’re finished’ and ‘at my age you take men as you can find them…if you can find them’.
Jerry’s tap routine with a hatstand to Top Hat, White Tie and Tails at the end of act 1 was fabulous.
Horace Hardwick (Matin Ball), Madge Hardwick (Vivian Parry), Alberto Beddini (Ricardo Afonso) were all terrific, Bates (Stephen Boswell) as the man servant was excellent.
Top Hat runs until Saturday, 31st March at the Bristol Hippodrome.
