FOLLOWING the success of the 2007-08 season, Malvern Concert Club is now looking forward to its 106th successive season presenting the finest in chamber music to local audiences.
Last year saw the club’s 500th concert since its foundation by Sir Edward Elgar in 1903, a sell-out at The Forum at Malvern Theatres.
The 2008-09 season aims to maintain this high standard and begins with the famed Nash Ensemble on September 25, playing Mozart’s greatest piano quartet and Dvorak's greatest piano quintet along with Mahler’s piano quartet, a piece that has not been played before at the concert club.
On October 23, the Gould Piano Trio with Robert Plane (clarinet) bring Beethoven and Brahms followed by the moving Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time, written while the composer was in a German prison camp.
The club seeks to promote rising stars and this season the prize-winning Anglo-Irish Carducci Quartet will perform on November 13, with a vibrant concert of works by Hayden, Ravel and Mendelssohn.
A baroque concert on January 29, 2009, featuring cellist Steven Isserlis and harpsichordist Maggie Cole, will be a feast of music by Bach, Handel and Scarlatti.
In spring next year the Dante Quartet will celebrate several anniversaries at once. The fourth quartet of one of the club’s vice presidents John McCabe, marks his 70th birthday and was written to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Haydn. The concert on March 12 also celebrates Purcell’s 350th birthday and Mendelsohn’s 200th.
The season closes with a recital of a song recital of works by Mozart, Schumann, Brahms, Beethoven and Wolf, performed by baritone Roderick Williams and his piano partner Susie Allan on May 7.
