There were very few positive reactions to series two of Channel 5′s The Great Big Benefits Wedding which aired tonight.

This wasn’t necessarily because of its controversial topic about people on benefits wanting to marry, but more so because Twitter seems a bit fed up of these benefits programmes.

The live documentary followed a couple from South Wales on benefits who were determined to have the wedding of their dreams on live television and generally tweeters were supportive.

Andrew, 43, and Joanna, 38, were childhood sweethearts but spent 20 years apart until eventually meeting again at a friend’s birthday party.

Their wedding budget was under a grand, buying a wedding dress online and settling for cupcakes instead of wedding cake.

But of course not everyone was terribly supportive.

When asked to respond to negativity about the wedding live on the show, Joanna said: “Why should we be denied from celebrating our love?”

The new Mr and Mrs Prosser were told that at the end of the show they would receive a special surprise.

And yep, you guessed it. Channel 5 gave the couple ‘vouchers’ to go away on honeymoon.
