OPERA with a sobering message for our time, relating to domestic abuse, is coming to Malvern Theatres.

Making a return to Malvern are OperaUpClose. This follows their successful performance of The Marriage of Figaro in 2015, and this time the offering will be Carmen.

A spokesman said: "It is set in a torrid South American landscape of dust and concrete, in the mid-twentieth century, where small-town boredom and machismo can turn nasty.

"Carmen captivates and provokes, disturbing the composure of everyone she encounters. Sparks fly when she meets José, but as her passion cools, his turns to obsession. Unable to control his feelings or the woman who inspired them, he descends into violence. But Carmen will not give up her freedom for anyone."

The spokesman added: "Carmen is murdered by her ex-partner. She has this in common with more than two women a week in England and Wales who are killed by a current or former partner. What she also has in common with these women is that she does not deserve to die.

"There is no typical victim of domestic abuse, but there is a stereotypical one – a meek, easily browbeaten, isolated woman. Carmen does not fit this image. She is confident, bright, apparently unfettered, and has a strong support network. None of this protects her from what happens to her.”

The date for the diary is Thursday February 16, from 7:30pm
