RIVER’S Up, a play about a flood on the River Severn by Malvern playwright Alex Jones is being performed by the Oxford Touring Theatre Company this Spring.
The comedy about a couple flooded from their home and drifting around the a watery Worcester in a boat searching for the Malvern Hills was originally produced by Alan Ayckbourn’s Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough and has also been adapted for BBC Radio 4 and staged at the Swan Theatre in Worcester.
The new touring production will be at Colwall Village Hall on April 24th, the final date of a tour that that will see the play performed at around 30 venues in Oxfordshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.
Alex’s plays often have links with the local area, including the Malvern Hills, the River Severn and Worcester and he describes the area as inspirational.
“I’ve lived in this area for a long time and find myself getting involved in local history and places,” he said. One of his earlier plays The Worcester Pilgrim was inspired by the discovery of the remains of a pilgrim in Worcester Cathedral in the 1980s.
River’s Up was critically acclaimed when it was performed on Radio 4 in 2006 and is about Tom and Sally Millington a couple about to be flooded out of their home - again. As the waters rise and show no signs of retreating the couple find themselves in a boat drifting through a watery landscape looking for the Malvern Hills. Sally blames melting icebergs and global warming.
Times and ticket prices for the Colwall Village Hall performance will be available nearer the date.
