What's the best modern building in Hereford?

HEREFORD’S most popular modern buildings have been revealed after a public vote conducted by Hereford Civic Society.

The society recently asked residents to name the building or project they felt had contributed the most to city life. While there was no clear winner, six sites came out on top.

According to those who voted, the best buildings and projects of recent times in the city are:

  • The Left Bank on Bridge Street.
  • The Chained Library in Cathedral Close.
  • The Courtyard Centre for Arts on Edgar Street.
  • The Colleges Campus, featuring Herefordshire College of Technology and Hereford College of Arts, on Folly Lane.
  • All Saints Church café.
  • The £5m Cathedral Close refurbishment.

A total of 40 buildings from the past 60 years were nominated, from Franklin House on the corner of Commercial Street and the Victoria Eye Hospital flats in Eign Street to the pedestrianisation of Widemarsh Street, the colourful Hereford Academy in Marlbrook Road and the A49 Greyfriars Bridge.

All the nominated buildings feature in a Jubilee supplement published in the autumn edition of HCS’s free magazine.

fmrbill, I'm trying to stop moaning and I thought I'd make a start by leaving the PCSO's alone, but your right Mr Dig's posting about the encounter with the PCSO deserves some comment.
Thankfully, my encounters with those that dress in that costume, have no powers, make no contribution to detecting crime and cost us all a great deal of money, have been very limited. From my perspective I think many of them think and act like they are stars in their own movie.
I take comfort in the sure knowledge that one fine day, some political leader will stand up and say it as it is. The concept of PSCO's is a dog. Its a dog. Its infested with fleas and these fleas bite.
My best regards old friend.

How can the Cathedral Close refurbishment be a modern building? All they done is stuck some railings around and done a bit of ground work.

Also I still can't believe it cost £5 million to do that, someone made money from nothing,

i still hate those railings, not that it makes much difference to me for the amount of time I see them.

Also All Saints Church café is not really a building, it is a semi refurbishment of a old building.

To be honest there are very few buildings in Hereford in the last 60 years that I would nominate.

We are hardly spoiled for choice in Hereford. I suppose the art college is about the best.

Addisons/starlite rooms for me

Compared to what it looked like for years 'a burnt out complete eyesore' its something to be proud of,
Its a pity the club running it looks like its about to go into administration even though Addisons/starlite is running as a profit

The Twitter thing says two CSO's were running after a 'prolific' thief in Hereford town centre yesterday. Just thought I'd mention that! :-)
