Rotary Club concert’s cash boost for charity

A CONCERT in Ledbury’s parish church has helped to boost the funds of a charity on the edge of the town.

St Michael and All Angels Church was filled with the sound of choral music when Ledbury Rotary Club hosted a concert in aid of Salter’s Hill, in Falcon Lane, its chosen charitable cause for the year.

More than £1,200 was raised for the charity, which formed in 1983 and provides services for people with learning disabilities and promotes choice, independence, respect, dignity and responsible lifestyle choices.

Rob Woolf, the charity’s finance manager, said: “Grants and donations help us to enhance the lives of those we support.

“It is likely that we will put the Rotary Club funding to our creative learning activities on site here at Keeper’s Cottage and at the appropriate time we will agree with the Rotarians how the money will be spent.”

Special guests at the event included the town’s mayor Phill Bettington and members of staff from the charity.

They heard a varied programme of music put together by rotarian Derrick Spencer, which saw performances from John Masefield High School’s choir, soprano Siriol Burford and The Tenby Male Voice Choir, who waived their fee to support the charity before singing My Grandfather’s Clock, American Trilogy and May Each Day, among others.

The charity also provides a wide range of high quality services working in partnership with clients, local authorities, parents and family members to allow people to develop and reach their full potential and integrate with their local community.

Back in November 2010 the charity benefited from a £20,000 grant from the Gannett Foundation, the charitable arm of Malvern Gazette and Ledbury Reporter owner Gannett Co Inc, having only applied for £5,000.

The funds were used to purchase a livestock trailer, 4x4 twin cab truck and animal and management equipment.

Creative learning at Salter’s Hill encompasses everything from literacy and numeracy, IT skills, craft, woodwork and ceramics through to the gardening and horticultural programme known as ‘hortec’ and land and livestock skills.
