Herefordshire theatre company facing closure unless it can recruit more actors

A THEATRE company which has been touring village halls across Herefordshire for eight years is facing closure because of a lack of actors.

After more than 200 performances, Bare Bones Theatre Company says it may be forced to bring the curtain down because of a shortage of 35 to 45-year-old performers.

“It has worked really well for us but sadly there is now this age-group where people can’t commit for various reasons which is completely understandable,” says Dave Baldwin, who has directed every show Bare Bones has put on.

“The last two people we had in that age category were teachers who have now left the area.

“We have a lot of experience but a lot of members are aged 60-plus.”

He says the 15-strong group is totally self-financed and since being set up in 2004 has put on 27 productions in 24 county venues.

Recent shows include Going Straight, Blithe Spirit and A Bolt from the Blue.

Its first performance in September 2004 was Shirley Valentine.

“There is very little village amateur theatre these days so many community halls are under-used which is a great shame.” said Dave.
