THE Globe at Hay-on-Wye has extra reason to celebrate the new year after winning a long drawn out fight for a new licence.

The arts venue and cafe in Newport Street, Hay, has been granted a new licence by Powys County Council.

The fate of the venue rested in the hands of a three-strong licensing committee after complaints about the venue, which previously ran events under temporary event notices (TENs).

Environmental health officers objected to the new licence on the grounds there had already been complaints about the venue, while police raised concerns about noise levels and drunkenness.

More than 100 people had signed a petition against the new licence.

But, after long discussions at a public meeting in Llandrindod Wells, it was granted - albeit with strict conditions, such as:

  • at least two door security staff on site during festivals,
  • adhering to a noise management plan to make sure sound levels are acceptable to Environmental Health,
  • installing a new CCTV camera outside the entrance,
  • an agreement that the Globe will be an arts venue, not a pub or nightclub.

The Globe is holding a New Year’s Eve party with live music from local band Sould and canapes from the Globe cafe.
