A HEREFORD woman who was donated a bone marrow from Germany has lost her battle against leukaemia.

Angie Gaze, from Tupsley, was a community nursery nurse at Wye Valley NHS Trust, but had to stop working after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in September 2011.

The 44-year-old spent several months at Cheltenham General Hospital and successfully had a bone marrow transplant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in April.

But, sadly her AML returned in September and was untreatable.

“Through the kind gifts of blood donors, Angie was able to have blood transfusions most weeks to aid her health,” said her husband Mark.

“Her passing away came suddenly after a good day, where we had been out doing ‘normal’ things.

“She enjoyed a wonderful Christmas, kept smiling all the time and would have taken satisfaction knowing that more awareness was given to leukaemia, the Anthony Nolan Trust and the British Bone Marrow Registry.

“To register as a bone marrow donor is a simple blood test.”

Angie initially worked as a dental nurse at Kyrle Street Dental Practice in Hereford before becoming a nursery nurse after having her son Matthew.

After moving away, she returned to the city in 2003 and worked at Hereford College of Technology Nursery before getting a job at Wye Valley NHS Trust.

Emma Allen, operational lead for health visiting and school nursing at Wye Valley NHS Trust, said that Angie was a very valued and popular member of the team.

“Angie had lots of experience and really cared for her clients,” she said.

“She was always willing to go the extra mile and took pride and passion in her work and her smile and gentle way will be sorely missed by us all.”

Angie was based at the Wargrave House Surgery where she carried out assessments on babies and toddlers and she also ran post natal groups, including a number at the Springfield Children’s Centre.

She is survived by her husband Mark, son Matthew and sister Sharon.

Her funeral is at 1pm tomorrow (Friday) at St Paul’s Church, Tupsley.

All flowers are welcome and donations to Leukaemia Research UK can be sent to Dawe Brothers, 115 Westfaling Street, Hereford, HR4 OJE.
