A PROMINENT campaigner has told an audience in Hereford her thoughts on various human rights issues.

Shami Chakrabarti, the director of civil liberties group Liberty, was pushed on matters including the abolition of ID cards and curbing the collection of DNA from innocent people.

Ms Chakrabarti, who was a guest of Hereford MP Jesse Norman, addressed more than 150 people gathering at Hereford United’s Starlite Rooms.

She told guests of her concern over “secret court” proposals and the government’s planned Communications Bill, dubbed a snooper’s charter.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Norman said: “The issues discussed at the meeting are very serious and pressing ones about personal freedom and the rule of law.”
