Jobs boost as store eyes up Hereford move

A HOME and garden superstore says it would create 140 new jobs if given permission to open a branch in Hereford.

The Range, which has 69 branches across the UK, has earmarked the former Homebase unit on Three Elms Road.

The firm says there is no other store in Herefordshire matching the items it sells which include furniture, leisure items, DIY and pet products.

Applicants CDS (Superstores International) Ltd – trading as The Range – describes its fare as “midprice home and garden products” and “entirely different” to department store John Lewis.

According to planning documents submitted to Herefordshire Council this week, CDS has secured a lease from Homebase to occupy the store, subject to planning permission.

“This is some good news for Hereford among the backdrop of retail chain administrations recently including Jessops and Blockbusters,” said Mike Ashton, chief executive of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce.

“Importantly it is creating jobs in the town at this challenging time, showing confidence in the city and county.”

Looks good - achieved with a minimum of fuss and at no cost to the council tax payer - isn't this how retail development SHOULD work? Lets hope those in power don't connive to keep them away to protect their own development - they've done it before ...

I don't mean to be disparaging, but if Homebase is a poor man's B&Q, then the Range is a poor man's Homebase, if that is even possible given the exceedingly poor quality of Homebase.

I've been to the range in kidderminster and its a good shop and has more choice the homebase ever did. Mizza you want to get a grip and be thankfull stores want to come to hereford and provide much needed jobs to the city, that's the problem with some people on here, always negative and rarely coment on something posative.

OK, I have a grip now..

It's a crap DIY Store replaced by a Crap DIY/Furniture store.

What's the good news?
Well, at least it's occupied by a retailer.
What they sell will be landfill in 1-5 years.
I see nothing positive in that..

Right, I am off to silt me wrists...

The good news is it will provide much needed jobs, may be not everyone can afford expensive stores and need shops like the range, and people like you who have their head stuck up their **** and think they are to good to shop at the range can go to more expensive shops.

Oi... Trucking and Mizza21... Stop flirting you two!!
Now then... These jobs that are being made... I'm just guessing now, but, given the size of the place (ie: it's not going to get much bigger), won't they be roughly the same as the ones lost from Homebase? So, not exactly a jobs boost, more a jobs break even?

I really hope that the Homebase staff who were made redundant get re-employed here, the staff there have always been really helpful and polite.
