Do you know the mystery Ross-on-Wye artist?

Mystery drawings appear on hoardings around the new Aldi site. Mystery drawings appear on hoardings around the new Aldi site.

ROSS-on-Wye could have its own Banksy on its hands.

Mysterious drawings have appeared on hoardings at the former Gardner Butcher Garages site in Brookend Street, including the Hereford Bull that appears outside the black and white house in Hereford High Town.

Other sketches are of a lollypop woman and a boy striking what looks like a Usain Bolt ‘thunderbolt’ pose and a couple and a dog being rescued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

The hoardings were put around the site to make it more attractive while plans are submitted by Aldi who now own it.

Are you the mysterious artist or do you know who it is?

If so, call Paul Rogers on 01432 845883 or email paul.rogers@herefordtimes.com

Almost as scruffy as the now seemingly permanent hoardings in High Town - all building work appears to have stopped here - what on earth is going on?

I did hear some very encouraging noises coming from the direction of these hoardings. I thought to myself "ay up, there's something going on over there" But as I got closer, I could see it was a busker tuning up !

lol I know. That is a pet peeve of mine, they put those boards up and then say tell school kids or college "art" students to deface them. Now sometimes - very occasionally - someone puts up some nice artwork. But more often than not it's various crayola coloured templated cows.

Also, I don't understand why that scaffolding is still there? The fire happened in October 2010, if, after two and half years, they haven't fixed a couple of fire damaged buildings - how are we to believe that they are going to build an entire complex in 14 months? .... oh no I retract that statement, it's all about the back handers, no one cares about that little building.

Interestingly, in August 2011, the HT reported on plans to do the work:

Seems to be going well *rolls eyes*

Back on topic;

I think referencing a Banksy is going a bit far - and I don't even like Banksy :P It just looks like some unsightly scribbling to me. Don't get me wrong, I actually even like general graffiti when it's done well.

To show I'm not an old complaining woman, compare the scrawling above to the freehand - from MEMORY - work of the autistic Stephen Wiltshire

Now if the work was more of that standard, it would be quite nice and impressive.

Yes, Stevens' work is unbelievable, a true savant. You would think that having a college of Art and Design in the city, the hoardings that seem to have sprung up across Hereford could have been more imaginatively decorated.

Would they make it a project for one or more of the students to decorate/adorn/comme
nt on the various hoardings around the place - good chance to let the imagination run and make the odd political comment too perhaps.

Restoration of the fire damaged shops in Hereford has probably been stopped as part of Herefordshire councils determination to wreck our existing high town and get everyone into the ESG, OLM, or whatever they're calling that bloody expensive waste of money nowadays!!!
