Cabinet minister to visit Herefordshire

THE Government's Environment Secretary has chosen Hereford to launch a £20m training programme for rural businesses – subsidising opportunities for 90,000 people nationwide.

On Monday, Owen Paterson will outline Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) plans to meet 70% of training costs on certain business, management and IT courses.

The Herefordshire College of Technology’s campus at Holme Lacy will host the launch, and be one of the colleges delivering subsidised training to help farmers, foresters and horticulturalists to grow their businesses.

“For too long the needs of rural business people have been overlooked,” said Mr Paterson. “Those days are over.”

Mr Paterson is also set to meet the leaders behind Hereford’s ‘Fast Start’ broadband initiative - a project that will connect 140, 000 homes in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire with ‘superfast’ broadband.

A process, insists Mr Paterson, that has the potential to revolutionise rural areas and open up countless business opportunities.

One of just 17 DEFRA ‘Rural Roadshows’ – aimed at discovering how to best support rural growth and jobs – it will provide a rare opportunity for Herefordshire community leaders to help shape government policy.

Christine Hope, chair of Herefordshire Rural Hubs Partnership, said: “We are looking forward to meeting the Secretary of State for the first time, and having an opportunity to discuss the issues affecting our community.”

For more on the visit, see Thursday's Hereford Times.

Article yesterday in the Daily Telegraph - "BT’s multi-billion pound investment in fibre broadband services is helping Britain become “a broadband leader in Europe”, its chief executive claimed on Friday, as the telecoms giant delivered a bigger profit than expected.

What is more interesting about this article are the comments about BT and its service. Anyone in Hereford City using BT fibre and getting good results?

"to help farmers, foresters and horticulturalists to grow their businesses."

See, no this is another thing that winds me up. EVERYTHING in Hereford is geared towards facking agriculture. I'm a growing local tech business without tractors, land or bloody potatoes. You look at the college course lists and they are just packed with how to build a table from a tree courses or how to plough a field.

On the subject of fiber, I'm with Plusnet (BT leased lines), and am getting a very grateful 56/20meg connection - which is great for work :)

I'm with Biomech - Plusnet offers a good service for less money than BT, although I am using for PC and a laptop, not business.
As to over-reliance on agriculture; well we are a county renowned for its farming, but I thought we were supposed to be gearing up for high tech firms coming to Hereford?
There used to be a saying my old Dad quoted many moons ago:
"I can't read and I can't write; but that don't matter 'cos I come from Hereford and I can drive a tractor."

I considered BT, but the adverse comments put me off. Is Sky any good?

I'm in Hereford City and moved to BT Infinity last December - have to say its been faultless so far. On Infinity 1 - up to 38Mb - and getting 37Mb with a 9Mb upload. Was getting 5Mb before on ADSL2 and this is actually cheaper for me now than the old tariff. Plus they sent me £50 of Sainsburys vouchers! I guess the only down side is that it’s an 18 month contract and if anything goes wrong you're stuck with script readers in India.
