ONE of Ross-on-Wye’s most dedicated swimmers believes the town should take inspiration from the Olympics when it comes to taking the sport forward.

A petition was started in Ross last October by campaigners worried that the existing pool in Red Meadow could be moved to John Kyrle High School as part of a £6 million investment to improve leisure facilities.

The council has said that discussions are in their earliest stages and there is no guarantee that any move will ever happen.

But Christopher Deane, who swims six times a week, believes a new 50-metre pool is what Ross needs.

The 69-year-old is happy with the present facilities, but sees no reason why something better cannot be built at the old Somerfield warehouse near the Labels outlet.

He said: “The facilities that are currently provided are a great asset to the town.

“But I think we should be working for something better – rather than something equal to, or poorer than, the present facilities.

“The complex I have in mind should be a first class venue for the people of this area and others from afar, not only providing swimming pools, but multi-sports facilities, a gym and studios.

“Accommodation and catering facilities would be required as an integral part of the scheme and there will be jobs for people of this area, while our schools would also benefit from such wonderful facilities which should hopefully inspire champions of the future.”

Christopher is happy for anyone to get in touch with him to discuss the plans.
