Representatives of Georgian aerospace company meet those from Hereford Enterprise Zone.
HEREFORD Enterprise Zone could be a step closer to securing hundreds of new jobs following the visit of representatives from the Georgian government and a Georgian aerospace company.
Today's visit to the enterprise zone in Rotherwas, branded Skylon Park, occurs with a view to locating an advanced manufacturing plant in the city.
Seattle based Get it Group brings together landowners and international businesses looking for locations to expand their operations.
For several months negotiations have been on-going between Herefordshire Council, the Enterprise Zone Board and the Get It Group who are looking to buy the land at Rotherwas and will then bring the Georgian investment into the county.
Discussions have progressed with the Get it Group to the extent that their client, Georgian firm Tbilisi Aerospace Manufacturing, is actively considering Hereford as a UK base.
The company will build components for a new small passenger jet with a target market in Eastern Europe. The visit represents the next stage in their negotiations with Herefordshire Council as landowner of the site.
Bill Jackson, chair of Hereford Enterprise Zone Board, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the delegation from Georgia as this brings more certainty to the company’s investment in Hereford.
"Not only will this investment bring many jobs into the city but will also provide an apprenticeship school for around 70 apprentices a year, and will provide the necessary skills and training to support the operation.”

What is it about us that we have all become so apologetic for thinking like this?
It's like some national disease. There is nothing wrong in wanting what's best for your own kids.

I thought Hereford Futures would be at the front end of this! However I suspect that the main reason for the American company GET IT Group in brokering this deal is supporting its American administration in getting Georgia into the EU and NATO. The country is very young, having broken away from the USSR after a war in 2008.
Mikheil Saakashvili, president of Georgia met with the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Eric Rubin. The main topic of discussion was continuance of the relationship between the two countries within the scope of the US-Georgia Charter on Strategic Partnership, and deepening co-operation in the spheres of defence and security. The sides also focused attention on the important contribution of Georgia in terms of international security."
It looks as if our apprentices could be making components for other military activities - maybe drones.

Is Jarvis involved in this? Tell me it ain't so!
The Leader of Herefordshire Council, Councillor Jarvis has been involved in regional politics for more than 20 years. A former Metropolitan Police officer, Councillor Jarvis is also a previous divisional director of operations in Grand Metropolitan plc. He has also worked for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) advising companies in Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I do also think its better for us that Phillips is over seeing this as he is a smooth talker and sure he will get us the better deal (if there is such a thing!) :)

New jobs are great, but will they be for local people??

Very few people in Hereford will have have jobs in this enterprise zone, it will be outside and then they will want to move here, so even more housing need to be built on green land and then the road will get more clogged up.
nothing they are doing is for Hereford.

More housing - more jobs
More roads - more jobs and then we may get a much needed byepass. Better roads into the area may lead to more firms moving to the area.

Jobs will be for locals if they can be bothered to apply.

The council can't even keep the roads we have got in good condition, so what is the point in having more roads?
The only reason why firms may want to move here is because they either get a reduction in rents, like what is happening at the Edgar Street Grid or it is because we are close to a Motorway.

Our road network is poor never mind the condition a nice dual carraigway onto the motorway would be most welcomed. Who cares why they come here as long as they do.
