‘Very good news’ – road to open again soon after wall is repaired
4:30pm Friday 8th February 2013 in News
AN important road is set to be reopened by spring as essential repair work on a crumbling wall starts.
Residents have welcomed news that Knapp Lane, the important link between the Worcester Road and the town centre, will be open again.
People from Bank Crescent, the narrow suburban street that has been used by motorists as a diversion into the town centre ever since Knapp Lane was closed in the autumn, were particularly pleased.
Melanie Lane, of Bank Crescent, said: “This is very good news. I’m glad it has been resolved. The situation has been a risk to life and limb, with cars very often mounting the pavement in our road, because they can’t pass one another.
“It should help the flow of traffic through the town as well.”
Mary Winfield, a trustee of the Ledbury Civic Society, who lives on the Worcester Road, at the Knapp Lane junction, said she had noticed an increase in traffic but questioned why many motorists had chosen to use Bank Crescent as a diversion route to and from the town centre.
She said: “Bank Crescent residents have had to bear the brunt of the diversion. Why don’t motorists travel down the Worcester Road and use the Ledbury bypass to get into the town centre?”
Herefordshire councillor for Ledbury Peter Watts also welcomed “the very good news”.
He said: “It took longer than was expected, with the poor weather and insurance firmds involved, but I am just glad that it has all come to an agreement.
