Air ambulance flown to West Malvern after quarry plunge

A CLIMBER was flown to hospital yesterday after falling in a quarry on the Malvern Hills.

Emergency services were called to the quarry above Westminster Bank at about 4.40pm after a man in his 40s was reported to have fallen about 15 feet.

A land ambulance was sent out as well as the air ambulance from Strensham, which landed in the grounds of the Elim College.

The man, who was suffering from a laceration to his head and complained of back pain, was flown to Worcestershire Royal Hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.

Glad he is ok, but now he should pay for the use of the air ambulance. If you take part in potentially dangerous sports then you should be willing to pay for the help in case of accidents, not the hospital treatment as we all pay for that but the air ambulance could of been needed for someone that needed it through no fault of there own, i.e. heart attack, motor accident and so on.

Should gays pay for aids treatment? Should obese people pay for treatment? Should smokers pay for treatment? Drinkers? An injured jockey at a race? A drowning swimmer? The NHS provides care to everyone and yes you should share the cost for everyone. Where would you draw the line? What about service users who pay no NI or tax? Should they be charged for ambulance transport? I suggest no, as good people we share the burden of others.

Longtreeroad is right, the Air Ambulance is a charity & people who wish to take risks & use it's services, should at least make a generous contribution towards it's running costs.

Don't forget the NHS doesn't fund the Air Ambulance.
It is a charity and I doubt that the good people who help pay for it would want to put conditions on its use.

Note to ghop11 - the air ambulance isn't paid for by the NHS, it is paid for by donations. And, i would also say that should the accident be a result of someone doing something that they are not supposed to be doing, in a place where they are not supposed to be doing it, then yes, they should at least make a decent contribution to the service.

Ghop11, your examples can not be helped.

all I am saying is if you intentionally put yourself in a dangerous position then accept the consequences, whether they are injury or financial.

The air ambulance was used because one person tried to be spider man, as have others, for this sort of use they
should cover costs.

FYI, the race courses pay for emergency services at all horse race's!

You are more than welcome to bare the burden of people that put them selves in danger, but I don't want to. My son had cancer and I have seen many more useful places this money could be used.

A child at the hospital nearly died because of a delay in the air ambulance, the child needed an urgent hospital transfer, the air ambulance was dealing with a person that had fallen from a roof after playing hide and seek.

Which is an accident which is what it is designed for.

Maybe everyone should stop doing anything remotely dangerous and stop in bed. Then the Air Ambulance could be used soley for dealing with the heart attacks these risk adverse people will have....

There is an element of danger in everything. All sport, walking, skiing etc and guess what - all of these are good for you.

I will take the health BENEFITS over the danger any day thanks. If you do the maths I think you will find things such as obesity drain far more cash from the health service than a couple of people falling down a hill every now and again.
