Bomb disposal hero who won Queen’s Gallantry Medal is coming to Newent British Legion

Colonel Robbie Hall. Colonel Robbie Hall.

NEWENT'S branch of the Royal British Legion is launching its poppy appeal campaign early this year with a visit from an army bomb disposal expert.

Colonel Robbie Hall QGM will give a talk entitled The Hidden Peril, provides a snapshot of the crucial work undertaken by the bomb disposal specialists.

His own experience includes leading a team to defuse an old German bomb discovered at the bottom of a gasometer at East Beckford.

The task became the subject of one of Michael Buerk’s 999 programmes, and Colonel Hall and the two non-commissioned officers who worked with him were all sent to Buckingham Palace to receive the Queen’s Gallantry Medal.

Organiser John Celino said "This is an opportunity not to be missed. All are welcome to learn more of the work of our Gallant armed forces and enjoy a delicious supper afterwards with a chance to meet Colonel Hall."

The meeting is at the Memorial Hall, Newent on Thursday, February 28, at 7.45 pm.
