Wartime bomb found in shed in Leominster

A BOMB dating back to the Second World War was found at a Leominster home.

The device was found in the shed of a house on Mortimer Street by 22-year-old Sam Sanders, a contract builder with Spa Decorators.

He said: “We were doing some insulation and rendering on the building and had to dismantle the shed, which was when we found the bomb.

“We first put it on the van, then realised we had better leave it in the shed, after all, it had been fine there for so long.

“I later googled ‘what to do if you find a bomb’, because we were unsure what to do as it was so old. But then we called the police.

“I was shocked – I’ve never come across anything like that before and probably never will again.”

Police were called to the house at 9.40am on Thursday, February 14.

Officers managed to assertain there was no risk of fire or explosion from the bomb, which had lain dormant in Dorothy Oughton’s shed for the past 40-years.

Dorothy, 84, said the discovery was ‘a bit of a shock to the system’.

She said: “You don’t expect to find a bomb in your shed. I have lived in this house for 41 years and never had any idea it was there.

“My husband had shelves and side-boards in the shed and it must have been behind them, as he could not have known about it.

“It must have been unearthed during the building work.

“I was shaken and am thankful it is gone now. I immediately thought it was an incendiary bomb when it was found as we were shown pictures of them during the war.”
