THE union flag is to be flown at half-mast on council buildings in Herefordshire whenever fallen servicemen and women are repatriated to the county.

Coun Olwyn Barnett, chairman of Herefordshire Council, said: “As the lead partner and a key signatory of the Herefordshire Armed Forces Community Covenant, it is important to show our support by recognising and remembering the sacrifices made by our armed forces around the world.

“It has been agreed we will fly the union flag at half-mast on our buildings, as a sign of respect when fallen service personnel are repatriated. Herefordshire is home to not only the prestigious Special Air Service but also The Rifles and many active reservists, so it is important for the council to be able to pay its respects to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service oftheir country.”

The council will also fly the union flag at half-mast to commemorate local civic dignitaries who have recently passed away.

At long last, something to congratulate them on doing.
