Storm drain railings

THE official clerical nod has been given for gated railings round an exposed storm drain in a local churchyard.

Ledbury rector, the Revd Paul Dunthorne, has given permission for the work in the so-called Closed Churchyard, by the parish church,to go ahead.

The drain, which is five feet deep, only came to light recently after brambles were removed.

Fears among residents and councillors grew that it posed a risk to walkers and animals, such as dogs.

The drain is thought to be hundreds of years old, being lined with the same kind of stone that make up the churchyard walls.

There is no prospect of filling itin.

At a town council meeting last week, Coun Tony Bradford asked whether the drain was still operational, and was informed thatit was.

The Closed Churchyard is owned by the church, but upkeep is the responsibility of the town council.
