IN a fitting tribute to the great cake-bakers of Hay-on-Wye's WI market stand, a cake cutting ceremony will mark the stall’s 40th anniversary today - as the ladies stay as on-trend as ever.

Now trading under the ‘Country Markets’ banner, some of the new breads, cakes and pies may be unrecognisable to the volunteers of 1973 – but, insists Chamber of Commerce chairman John Evans, their legacy of quality and service remains.

The stalls pies, jams and meat are also all locally sourced, while the contributors have “kept pace with changing tastes”.

The ceremony will be kicked off by the Town Crier at 11:00am in the town’s Butter Market, with guests including local MP Roger Williams, Councillor Gareth Ratcliffe and Mayor Fiona Howard.
