A CAMPAIGN has started to help a young girl who lost a leg to bone cancer get back on her feet.

Naina Dickens-Chauhan was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in July last year. Complications following surgery meant she had to have her right leg amputated below the knee seven months later.

Now, friends and family are pulling together to help the 13- year-old from Llandefalle, near Hay-on-Wye.

Jo Hodges, from Hay, was the latest to help raise the £50,000 needed to buy a prosthetic leg to allow Naina, pictured, to continue with her hobbies including cycling and horse riding.

She said: “What happened to Naina could happen to anyone, but hopefully we can help her to do some of the things she enjoys again.”

Jo, who co-owns the Travelling Tea Room with Abbi Jenkins, arranged a tea and cake sale at St John’s Hall last Saturday and made £407 for the cause.

Naina’s mother, Heather, said her daughter, who hopes to finish her chemotherapy next month, continues to remain positive.

“She’s been really amazing and has touched everyone,” she said.

“She’s a very placid and smiley girl, and everyone has been brilliant in their response to our plea so far.

“Naina will start off with a prosthetic leg from the NHS, but the leg we are fund-raising for will provide flexibility and allow her to do so much more.”

There’s also a quiz night at The Conservative Club in Hay on May 8 at 7.30pm to raise funds.
