ONE of the biggest get togethers of local Scout for a decade has taken place with an international theme.

Seventy Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from 1st Ledbury Scout Group and Ledbury’s Western Explorer Scouts joined together for the weekend camp at Warren Oak, Staplow The adults – 12 parentsand 17 leaders – rose to the challenge of putting on an exciting and entertaining programme. Group Scout leader Dr Robert Scholefield said “The youngsters were mixed and divided into five “nations” – which were, Mexicans, the Romans, the French, Mars and Scotland. “The youngsters teamed together to experience archery, backwoods cooking, orienteering,trading post challenges and many other activities. The Scouts were able to go canoeing on a local lake. “On Saturday evening each nation donned national dress and cooked a meal appropriate to their country and then put on activities at the camp fire.” During the weekend the group held its annual meeting at which Shaun Burch was reappointed group chairman.The Malverns’ Scout district commissioner, Paul Griffiths, stayed Saturday night and helped judge the meals and fancy dress. Dr Scholefield said: “It was a close competitionbut just won by the Romans, who received the coveted Golden Tent Peg trophy. It was very rewarding to see so many young people working well together and having fun – it wasa credit to the group.”
