HUNDREDS of people lined the streets of Ross-on-Wye to watch the town’s annual carnival procession.

Around 17 floats were on display on Saturday – up from 11 last year – in the summer sun.

“It went so well and goes to show that you if the weather is good, you get hundreds of people coming out,” said committee chairman Anne Gray. “We had many floats and walkers, as well as the Bill Bailey Jazz Band and Brothers Blue.

“We also had an Indian drumming band and the James Danter fun fair, which went down really well. There were also around 40 charity stalls, allowing everybody to make money for their cause.”

Ross Pre-school Playgroup once again came out on top in the class one category after winning last year’s prize.

The Ashfield Walking Bus scooped first in the class four section for the second year running, while other winners included Beth’s Wish (class two), Xentricity Youth Theatre (class three) and R Seabourne (class six). Class five was won jointly by Sharon Heaven and “the Milky Bar Kid”.

Now, Ledbury is gearing up for its own carnival, which takes place on August Bank Holiday Monday (August 26).

The theme of the 39th Ledbury Carnival is The West End Comes to Ledbury, and people are being encouraged to dress up and get involved in the procession.

There will also be stalls and entertainment from local bands.

Tickets for the raffle will be on sale each Saturday in the run up to the carnival from committee members around the Market House.
