Ledbury food bank wants extra space
10:05am Friday 9th August 2013 in News
LEDBURY Food Bank could move to larger premises, as the town council looks towards assisting it more actively.
Currently food parcels are usually distrubuted from St Katherine’s Hall, to people who have been awarded vouchers for the food.
Food bank organisers have suggested several ways in which the town council could help, and these include helping to find larger premises and for the council itself to issue food bank vouchers to the needy on Wednesday mornings in the Church Lane offices.
This is still to be agreed, and some councillors are still wary of becoming too involved with an organisation that was initially created by the Parochial Church Council of St Michael and All Angels Church to see if the need was there.
But Coun Keith Francis said: “We are not saying we shall take on the running of the food bank but will see how we can help them.”
This was agreed by felllow town councillors at last week’s full town council meeting in the Market House.
All the churches of Ledbury are now involved in running the food bank and there are 40 volunteers.
In May it was reported that up to 80 people a week, adults and children, were being helped by the Food Bank in Ledbury.
Another way the town council could assist is with any grant application which may be needed for the Food Bank in the future.
Currently, however, the Food Bank is well on target.
Co-ordinator Liz Wreford said: “I am pleased to say we are well resourced both in terms of donated goods and also money to spend to supplement the gifts so that we can offer a balanced range of foods.”
