MP – we need to talk about fracking
4:00pm Saturday 10th August 2013 in News
ONE of Herefordshire’s MPs has called for a “sensible debate” over the controversial practice of fracking.
An online petition entitled Ban Fracking in Herefordshire has been posted on Facebook against the process also known as hydraulic fracturing.
This involves pumping large volumes of water, sand and chemicals underground at high pressure to fracture the rock and release shale oil or gas.
But the procedure has attracted criticism from some environmental groups which fear it will lead to earthquakes and pollution of water sources.
Bill Wiggin, MP for North Herefordshire, said: “I think the truth of the matter is we have got to have affordable energy and energy security.
“Herefordshire has a very high proportion of people living in fuel poverty. If we can keep fuel prices down that is beneficial to people on fixed incomes.”
