Anna is aiming high with challenge

A VET is getting ready to scale Africa’s highest mountain to raise cash for a maternity hospital in Tanzania.
Ann Carman, of White House Vets, Malvern, hopes to scale the 20,000 ft-high Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, within six days.
Mrs Carman, who lives on Tennyson Drive, has been training hard, carrying a weighted pack on her back up and down the Malvern Hills in the early hours of the morning with her dog Fritz since March.
She said: “I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. I’m quite anxious and worried about what I’ve said I’d do but I don’t think I could have done much more training than I have done. I am worried about how I’ll cope, how I’ll manage mentally and physically, and if I’ll even reach the top, but saying that, I’ll be very disappointed if I don’t.”
The 54-year-old and her group of 14 people, including a doctor, nurse and a priest, are aiming to raise the money so Berega Hospital can provide skilled staff on an ongoing basis to train local people.
She said: “I wanted to do it because it is about education rather than just buying them stuff. The hospital just hasn’t got the people who know what to do in an emergency like we would in the developed world.
“The money will fund a scheme where an obstetrician and a midwife from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham will go and educate the people in the hospital.
The people there will then go out in to the wider communities and rural places to spread the education we have given.”
Visiting health professionals will be sent out and swapped on three month periods.
John Green, a retired priest whose parishes included Feckenham, Hanley and Tiverton, instigated the fundraising trip when he visited the area last year as part of a diocese partnership and witnessed one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world.
The team starts their climb on Thursday.
