West End glitz at popular carnival
11:00am Friday 23rd August 2013 in News
CROWDS of up to 10,000 people are expected to pack into Ledbury on Bank Holiday Monday to enjoy the sights and sounds of the town’sannual carnival.
The flagship event is celebrating an unbroken run of 39 years and this year’s West End themed procession is being tipped by organisers to be one of the bestyet.
Carnival committee chairman Steve Clegg said: “It is an inspiring theme and so it should be an excellent carnival procession and the weather, according to forecasts, willbe fine.
“The carnival is a community event and its aim is to provide an afternoon of entertainment and pleasure for local and national charities.”
As a result there will be more than 20 charities and groups with town centre stalls, from Grey Hound Rescue and the RSPB, to the Phoenix Children’s Foundation andthe National Trust.
Lots of traders will also be setting uptheir stalls.
But, as ever, the most enduring memories are likely to be those provided by the procession.
A glimpse of the West End hit musicals, from the Lion King to Grease, will add showbiz sparkle to the floats.
Aside from the procession there will be fun fair attractions in Bye Street and St Katherine’s car park, while Ledbury Horticultural Society is holding its annual show in the community hall, LawnsideRoad.
A park and ride scheme will be in operation at Ledbury Rugby Club. St Katherine’s, Bye Street and Lawnside Road car parks will be closed on carnival day, but Bridge Street car park will remain open.
