Three-year-old hopes to inspire charity fundraising with 11ft sunflower
A THREE-year-old girl who might well have grown the county’s tallest sunflower at 11ft is hoping to inspire others to do the same and raise charity funds.
Beth Davies, from Tillington, planted the sunflower seed earlier this summer after encouragement from her nan, Joan, and mum, Lisa.
But the good weather has given the sunflower a life of its own and it’s now reaching the heady heights of 11ft.
Lisa said: “She got a couple of seeds initially which she planted in some yoghurt pots but decided to plant it in the soil as there was limited room for growth in the pots.
“She kept watering it and then we returned from holiday to find it had totally shot up. We used a bean cane to keep it upright and the last time we marked it, it was 11ft.”
Beth is now hoping to inspire others to grow their own sunflowers – and hopefully raise some money in the process.
“The plan is to pay a pound – which would go towards St Michael’s Hospice – and see how tall the sunflower could grow. People could also ask for sponsorship while it grows.”
Beth’s nan Joan, added that the funds would help go towards the new St Michael’s Hospice building – and would coincide with its 30th birthday.
“Beth would be so proud to know she was inspiring others and helping to raise money that would help people who need it,” she added.
Chris Smart, marketing and communications manager at St Michael’s Hospice, said the idea is “inspirational”.
“It’s wonderful to have St Michael’s Hospice associated with something as beautiful as a sun flower.
“The hospice provides specialist care for all family members so it’s particularly special to have grandparents and grandchildren working together to raise funds for our hospice,” he said.
“Because of community support like Joan’s, Beth’s and Lisa’s we are able to care for people affected by a life-limiting illness at the time they need it most”
