Four friends crossed Europe in car costing less than £50 each
FOUR Hereford friends crossed Europe in a car that cost less than £50 each.
Ben Jones, 25, Adam Maxwell, 25, Tom Maxwell, 23, and Christopher Davies, 25, covered 3,000 miles in the Ramshackle Rally.
The challenge saw them drive from Calais to Munich in a car valued at no more than £200.
And it took just five days to complete the journey in a 1994 Volvo 440 that had been given the all-clear by Gerry Doverman Mercedes Specialists in Hereford ahead of the trip.
The friends decided to raise money for local charity Beth’s Wish, which was set up following the death of Bethan Davies, who died of a rare cancer in September last year.
Team member Ben said the challenge was fun but added that he was glad it was all over.
He said: “We had a few scary moments, such as when we were driving down Stelvio Pass. Anyone who watches Top Gear will know about it as they said it was the best driving road in the world.
“However, due to all of the braking along the pass and the age of our car the brakes overheated and stopped working.”
Fortunately the gang made it to Germany uninjured and then began a 19-hour drive back to Hereford.
The group’s efforts have so far raised about £500 for Beth’s Wish.
