Award for Amey staff foil Hereford robbery
TWO people who detained a man that threatened them with a knife have been commended for their bravery.
Angela Marston and Tom Foster were working in Quay Street, Hereford, for Amey when they saw a group of people acting suspiciously in the garden of a nearby property.
The elderly householder was out at the time, but when she returned, Angela and Tom told her about their concerns and accompanied her into her home.
But, once inside, a man, who was in a bedroom, threatened Angela and Tom with a knife.
However, they managed to disarm and detain him until the police arrived.
The pair were just some of the people to receive an award from the High Sheriff of Herefordshire.
Other recipients included Sergeant Nigel Hagan, who took command of a difficult search for a woman who was thrown from her horse on the county’s border with Gloucestershire.
Special Constable James Helyer was awarded the “probationer of the year” prize for his dedication and ability to engage with the public. During the past two years, James has completed 1,460 hours on duty – three times more than the minimum four hours a week that is required – and even dealt with the successful conviction of a woman for drink driving.
Inspector Peter Gebbie, Sergeant Andy Scott and Detective Sergeant Mark Peters also received accolades for completing more than 20 years in the police force.
“These commendations recognise the outstanding contributions towards policing in Herefordshire made by our officers and staff, often going above and beyond the call of duty,” said Supt Ivan Powell.
“It was also a chance for the force to thank those members of the public whose good deeds and efforts have significantly contributed towards making the county a safe place for us to live and work.”
The event also included the first official duty of the newly formed Herefordshire police cadets, who welcomed attendees.
