Ledbury's the best place in UK!

WHEN Rob and Helen Collinge retired, they agreed to sell their home in Melbourne, Australia and emigrate to the United Kingdom.
But after scouring the country looking for a suitable home to spend their free years they agreed there was only place to fit the bill – Ledbury. “As retirement approached for us both, we made a decision to sell up, take advantage of my British passport, as I was born in Birmingham, and move to the UK,” said Mr Collinge, aged 69.
“Having made the decision, the next question was where to settle in the UK?”
He says the couple immediately discounted London, Birmingham and Manchester, as well as the south-east and southwest of England as they didn’t want to be “trapped in one corner of the country”. Scotland was considered too cold.
Three years ago, during a trip over here, they looked at the east of England but thought it was too flat, so headed west for Herefordshire and Shropshire.
“Shropshire seemed a bit too remote,” said Mr Collinge. “Then we came to Hereford and fell in love with its old world charm.” He left Britain aged just seven after his parents emigrated.
Later in life he met Helen, who is now 64, with the couple going on to have three children who are all in their 30s.
The move has meant travelling is a lot easier, and shorter, than in Oz.
“Driving from Melbourne to Sydney would take about 10 hours,” he said. “In between you see literally nothing. We just never used to leave the city limits. We were once invited to an engagement party elsewhere in Victoria (the state Melbourne lies in) and it took us eight hours there and back.”
He said the couple will always have a great affinity with Australia but haven’t been back.
“For us, Ledbury ticks more boxes than any other place in the UK.
There’s an enormous amount of history here.”
