A SCHOOL near Ross-on-Wye is £500 better off after one of its pupils won a poster competition to keep people safe on the roads.

Pupils at Walford Primary School learnt about the importance of children being easily seen near traffic, such as selecting a bright coat, providing fluorescent and reflective armbands or a school band.

The competition, part of Herefordshire Council's 'Be Bright, Be Seen' campaign, was won by year three pupil Ebony Shepherd, whose poster will be printed and distributed to schools throughout the county.

She also received a framed copy and her school £500 in prize money.

"We are really delighted that Ebony's poster has won this competition and that the school will receive the £500 prize money, which we will be putting to good use," said headteacher Louise George.

"The safety of our pupils is paramount and the Be Bright, Be Seen campaign gave us and opportunity to raise awareness with parents of the need to make sure that appropriate high visibility clothing or accessories are worn on the school commute."
