TWO major community events are being planned this year.

Traders are looking to cook up a real treat for the Big Breakfast later this month and a town celebration is planned for June after last year’s successful Ox Roast celebration.

The Ledbury Big Breakfast, on Friday, January 31 and the following day, sets a new town tradition, because it follows on from a similar event last year., which offered hungry residents and visitors hearty breakfasts featuring the best of local ingredients.

Big Breakfast spokesman Griff Holliday said: “Last year it was very special and it’s happening again whatever the weather.

“So far we have 15 outlets keen to take part, including a hotel, a number of cafes, butchers and drinks shops, both in Ledbury and nearby.”

All participants will be asked to create a special dish for the event, using local produce because the celebration is the brainchild of the Ledbury Food Group. The group is keen to promote the connection “from field to fork” and celebrate what the Ledbury area has to offer, in terms of produce.

Moving on to the summer, the town will enjoy a Community Day on Saturday, June 7.

This is an attempt to follow up on the success of the Ledbury Ox Roast in June 2013.

More than 5,000 people thronged the town centre to take part in the ox roast celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation.

The idea is to let local groups and organisations show what they are all about and create a feelgood feeling in the town.

Community Day spokeswoman Emma Putnam said of the 2013 event: “It brought many residents and visitors to the town centre, increasing general foot fall and contributing to the town’s economy.”

Venues for the 2014 event are likely to include the Market House and the Recreation Ground.

Sponsorship is being sought, and Heineken, the owner of the the UBL cider plant, off the Little Marcle Road, has already indicated it will support the event.
