A HEREFORD pub popular with people of all ages and walks of life has been voted favourite in the city.

The Barrels on St Owen Street took the title of Hereford’s favourite pub in the final round of the Discover Hereford 2013 competition – set up by MP for Hereford and South Herefordshire Jesse Norman.

The flagship Wye Valley Brewery pub received praise for its house beers, friendly welcome and outdoor area.

Second place went to The Stagecoach on West Street where landlord James Smith was praised by regulars for the quality of the pub’s food and the "cosy" atmosphere.

Third place was awarded jointly to The Broadleys and The Horse and Groom on Eign Street.

Tina Carey of The Broadleys was applauded for her hard work in improving the pub’s fortunes, while local drinkers hailed The Horse and Groom for its entertainment and GL cider on tap.

The competition was timed to tie in with the run-up to Christmas, and invited people to nominate their favourite places to eat, drink and shop in Hereford.

The winners received a certificate from Jesse and will be invited to a winners' party next month.

Prizes will also be presented for the best nomination in each round.
