CLOSURE of one carriageway on one of Hereford's busiest roads is to take place tonight.
The eastbound carriageway on Newmarket Street will be closed to allow a crane to lift air conditioning units into the Old Market site for the Debenhams store.
Work to transform Newmarket Street into a tree-lined "boulevard" started in January and will be ongoing for around three months.
From Sunday, major work will start to Widemarsh Gate, which will mean one lane closure in either direction on Blueschool and Newmarket Street.
During this period, traffic lights will be used to assist with regulation traffic flow and pedestrian crossing locations will be slightly altered.
The gates in the centre of Widemarsh Gate will remain closed for the duration of the work and the traffic lights on Widemarsh Street will be “bagged”.
The exit from Widemarsh Street will become a give-way junction.
Herefordshire Council is advising that delays will be expected during this period and journeys will need extra time.
The council will use its Twitter and Facebook accounts to communicate day to day regarding expected congestion
