PEOPLE suffering from eye disease as a result of diabetes are invited to a support group meeting at Worcestershire Royal Hospital on Thursday.
The Worcestershire Diabetic Eye Disease Support Group will meet at the hospital’s diabetes centre from 10am until midday on Thursday, February 20.
The group will be led by consultant Jasbir Chhina, who will talk about the benefits of registering as sight-impaired, and senior Orthoptist Carol Allen, who will have information on low vision aids.
The high levels of glucose caused as a result of diabetes can cause diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the retina.
Mrs Chhina said: “Retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness among people of working age in the UK.
“It is important to understand what it is, how it is treated, what can be done to reduce the risk of developing it and what positive actions you can take.”
Family members supporting people with diabetes-related eye diseases are also welcome.
