A GROUP of keen knitters are about to see their creations travel thousands of miles to help sick children in Nepal.

The members of the 'knit and natter' group held in Dulas Court, Ewyas Harold, have been knitting blankets which will be taken to the poverty-stricken country by Dr Mark Smith, a surgeon at Hereford County Hospital.

Dr Smith will perform specialist surgeries in the country but the women at the care home wanted to do their bit too.

Dulas Court activities coordinator, Nikki Ellis, said: "This sort of project is very meaningful as it promotes a real sense of community which can be so important to older people. This group also gives an opportunity for real interaction between residents and the locals, with firm friendships formed over time."

In the past, the group - which is held for two hours each week - has knitted scarves and hats for charity missions and their next project will be making children's dolls for local police stations.
