A MEETING has been called to discuss Ledbury's Christmas lights display for 2014, and ways to fund a display beyond then.

The lights cost Ledbury town council around £15,000 a year, including installation; but the three year contract for the rental of the lights ends this year.

With some town councillors having suggested that paying for town toilets should come before paying for the lights, the chairman of the Christmas Lights Committee, former town mayor, Coun Bettington, has been looking into other possibilities for funding and support.

He has even been on a fact-finding mission to Bromyard, to see how that community funds its lights.

Another possibility is more support from local shopkeepers, and Coun Bettington said that members of the Traders' Association would be most welcome at the meeting, which will take place on Monday, March 24, in the town council offices, at 7pm.

Coun Bettington has written a report, containing some of his ideas. But he declined to elaborate further, in advance of the meeting.

"Let's see what the feeling of the meeting is," he said.
