STUDENTS at a county secondary school made easy work of crunching numbers in a recent competition.

The Earl Mortimer College (EMC) in Leominster recently hosted the UK Maths Trust team maths challenge regional finals – and took third place.

Led by maths teacher, Aaron Treagus, EMC entered two teams of four who battled through four different rounds of intense maths including a group round, cross number, shuttle and relay.

They were up against other teams of year eights and nines from across Herefordshire and its neighbouring counties – all battling it out for a place in the national finals in London.

In third place, EMC was the highest ranked Herefordshire school with the Royal Grammar School in Worcester taking second place and Cheltenham's Dean Close School in first spot.

Dean Close School will now represent the region in the London finals.
