Twenty sites being tested for air pollution levels as "Saharan smog" hits the county

Major smog monitoring operation underway across Herefordshire

A fog hangs over the city's new development this morning - Herefordshire Council has confirmed it is monitoring air quality at a number of county locations.

Is this fine dirt on one of our team member's cars caused by the Saharan 'smog'?

TWENTY sites across the county are being monitored for air pollution levels as of this morning (Thurs.)

Herefordshire Council has confirmed a major monitoring operation is underway in response to the "Saharan smog" phenomenon that has pushed air pollution levels across the UK to some of the highest levels recorded.

Of the 20 sites in the county now being monitored for nitrogen oxide levels and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Bargates, Leominster, and the A49 corridor through Hereford are immediate areas of concern.

Bargates, in particular, has a long history of air pollution issues.

The council is repeating health warnings issued nationally over the smog. But, as yet, no specific public health plan has been activated.

For many across the county, contact with the smog has been a fine coating of sandy dust across  surfaces such as cars over the past 48 hours.

The smog is produced mainly by sunlight reacting with nitrogen oxides - emitted largely by traffic - and VOCs in the atmosphere.

Airborne particles are formed as sunlight hits these chemicals causing smog.

The pollution cloud has been caused by powerful dust storms brought in on the southerly winds from the Sahara and smog being blown in from the near continent.

Should have been in London in the fifties. I had to walk in front of the buses with a torch. You'd know what smog was then. Pathetic.

well middle of town smog I would suggest is PARTLY,caused by cars now being forced to drive everywhere at 20mph more routes to come, around city centre, and more traffic lights in Hereford centre outskirts, than anywhere else in the country I would image, look at the new Newmarket street there are now 5 sets of lights from the old farmers arm to Edgar street roundabout coming from commercial square. WHAT A JOKE !!!!!!!!!

Dear sirs
reference to smog and dust and grit etc.I can remember the 1976 sand up from the Sahara because there was a brownish deposit on our car when we
lived in Hertfordshire. I enclose an extract from the Anglosaxon Chronicles which is almost similar as follows:F685 Her wearth on Brytene blodi ren, meole butere wurdon gewend to blode....F685 Here there was in Britain rain the colour of blood and milk and butter appeared to made\turned to blood....

Dear sirs
I would like to make a comment about the proposed new roads this is something like 50 years plus, a ring \bypass was proposed in the 1960s but there was so much opposition from the business\others point of view so it was changed to a inner ring\bypass road if original had been carried out there would not be the congestion and and traffic jams that there is now. It does not pay to be too short-sighted. I am in favour of the new road proposals you cannot stop progress forever and a day. I hope the people of the county will show abit more imagination and foresight and
positiveness. Our towns were not built or designed for cars, lorries motorcycles biciycles etc. ajd
