A FATHER and son team plan to pedal to the length of the UK in an epic two-week ride for charity later this month.

Drawing on the best both generations, the Steve and Matt Owen will be completing the famed Lands End to John O’Groats route on the smooth-riding 1980s touring bikes, while using son Matt’s iPhone for a little directional assistance.

While Steve still has his trusty touring bike, Matt has had to pick up his own 1980s tourer, equipped with a pannier.

The Herefordshire pair has already raised more than £11,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support but will continue fundraising before their departure at the end of July.

They will undertake the 1,000-mile ride with no support vehicle, so will have to carry everything they need on their bikes.

And the paternal rivalry is already kicking in.

Matt said: “the £11,000 we have raised so far is great – but it won’t stop me leaving Dad behind on the trip.

Dad Steve added: “Helping such a great charity is great and makes the journey and the effort really worthwhile.”
