THE Anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War was celebrated with art and style at a recent family fun day in Newent.

Newent's Picklenash School joined forces with Glebe Chapel and the Tom Roberts Adventure Centre to have a painting competition with a World War One theme.

Pastor Rupert Abbott, of Glebe Chapel, who organised the event and presented the prizes, said "This was done to promote community involvement at school level and I was pleasantly surprised at the number of entries. forty four, and the quality of them.

"The paintings were created by children working together in groups of five and there were so many good entries that as well as three category winners there were two seconds and two thirds in each group, and three highly commended."

The Chairman of Newent Branch of the British Legion, John Celino, also presented cakes for the whole school as a thank you for the school's excellent involvement in the Remembrance Concert and Church Service.
